Processing-Property Relationships in 3D Printed Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene
PublicThe objective of this research project was to explore the impact of layer height on mechanical properties. Specifically, the tensile and flexural strength of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene prototypes printed using fused deposition modeling. The research approach was to 1) Generate samples for testing; 2) Characterize the mechanical properties of 3D printed specimens; 3) Evaluate the results of mechanical testing. The results show that an increase in layer height causes voids and discrepancies from the specimens’ original dimensions, while decreasing layer height results in increased residual thermal stress, both of which negatively impact interlayer adhesion. As a result, an intermediate layer height of 200 μm was observed to have the highest tensile and flexural strength.
