Sailplane flight computer

The goal of this project was to develop an embedded system, which would help a sailplane pilot navigate the skies of south central New England. The final design implemented three main components: a GPS receiver, a microprocessor, and a serial display. The BASIC Stamp microprocessor parsed serial data transmitted by the GARMIN GPS receiver. This information was transformed and organized by the processor into three user-friendly screen displays of navigational information including: time, number of satellites in view, speed, course over ground, distance and direction to the indicated destination airport or landing filed [i.e., field], final glide, best glide ratio, altitude, and lastly the vertical rate of the sailplane.
