“Revised Affordable Housing for the Modern Family” aims to reimagine affordable housing in Worcester, Massachusetts to address the needs of modern families seeking flexible and affordable living spaces. The project takes into consideration the complicated housing and political landscape of Worcester, the rise in multigenerational housing, and the need to explore alternatives in public housing. To inform the design, participatory sessions were conducted with public housing residents and WPI students in Worcester. The result is a mixed-use development that includes residential and commercial spaces aimed at contributing to Worcester’s Downtown Urban Revitalization Plan. The project's design creates a variety of living arrangements, including multigenerational households, co-living, and shared spaces intended to promote social interaction and communal relationships. The commercial spaces are integrated with the residential spaces to create a vibrant, walkable community that supports local businesses and contributes to neighborhood vitality. By prioritizing flexibility, accessibility, and community, the design provides a framework for addressing the evolving needs of modern families while accounting for the unique challenges of Worcester’s environmental, housing, and political conditions.
