Using Biofilms for the Detection and Bioremediation of Arsenic

Over 200 million people worldwide rely on water sources that are contaminated with arsenic, which is detrimental to human health. We designed two simple genetic circuits to detect and bioremediate arsenic in a cheap and effective manner. When these genetic circuits are incorporated into a S. epidermidis biofilm to form a filter, the biofilm will fluoresce in the presence of arsenic and chelate arsenic ions to remove them from water, thereby improving human health.
