Stressed Out! Effects of Bisphenols on the Cellular Stress Response
PublicConcern over the safety of BPA in plastic products has lead to its substitution with related bisphenols BPF and BPS, though the safety of these alternatives is unknown. Using fluorescence microscopy and Western blots, we examined cellular stress responses in several human cell lines following treatment with bisphenols. We find that BPA and BPF cause stress granule formation, likely via activation of the PKR kinase pathway. This work has important implications for the continued use of bisphenols in plastics.
