Preserving Heritage in the Face of Urban Development in Hong Kong
PublicDownloadable Content
open in viewerWith some of the original Hong Kong heritage fading away, it is important to discover the roots of the issue in order to address it. We determined the original Chinese settlement area in Sheung Wan to be most vulnerable to socioeconomic change and identified critical aspects of their heritage to preserve. We also discerned which of the changes in the area were beneficial or detrimental to the heritage preservation. This work is imperative to help tackle the gentrification within the area before it transforms into cosmopolitan and westernized at the expense of traditional heritage. This project allowed us to make recommendations regarding how to address the changes in our area. The life of the city will be strengthened by preserving heritage and highlighting its importance to the people.
